What is Veganuary?

The largest vegan movement across the globe was founded in England back in 2014. Which has now grown internationally, influencing thousands of individuals each year to be vegan for the month of January. Retailers, primarily in parts of Europe and the US rush to join in on the trend, with new vegan products created for restaurant menus, in turn – spreading awareness on what it tastes like to be vegan.

Essentially, ‘Veganuary’ was created for individuals like you and I, to opt in taking a pledge to be vegan for the month of January. You can sign this pledge and receive resources of vegan recipes, tips and trips, easy meal plans and access to a supportive community who is giving the challenge a go to!

During the 2020 campaign, more than 400,000 people took our pledge to try a vegan diet, while more than 600 brands, restaurants, and supermarkets promoted the campaign, and launched more than 1200 new vegan products and menus in the UK market alone.

Something I found interesting was- their results in a survey they distributed for January 2020. Over 400,000 people took part in the year of 2020, their reasons were the following:

  • 38% Health
  • 37% Animals
  • 18% Environment
  • 7% Other

They have grown so heavily supported, they’ve even taken on ambassadors such as the likes of, Joaquin Phoenix, Paul McCartney & Evanna Lynch.

“If you look at the climate crisis or the violence of our food system and feel helpless, thinking ‘I wish there was something I could do’- you can. Right now. Sign up to try vegan this January.” – Joaquin Phoenix

Veganuary’s Vision?

Our vision is simple; we want a vegan world.

A world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change and drive wild animal populations to extinction.

Our mission is to inspire and support people to try vegan, drive corporate change, and create a global mass movement championing compassionate food choices with the aim of ending animal farming, protecting the planet, and improving human health. (“What We Do | About Us | Veganuary”, 2021)
